Beyond just words … it’s the heartbeat

"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent." Victor Hugo’s poignant words beautifully capture the essence of music's indescribable power. It transcends the realm of spoken language, touching our souls in ways words cannot. I have loved music since I was a young child but it wasn’t until middle school when I started to understand its power over the human soul.

Music is a universal language, surpassing boundaries of speech and culture. It carries a unique story and emotional resonance within each genre. Classical, rock, jazz, blues, and country each speak in their distinct dialect of this universal language, connecting us in shared experiences and feelings.

Classical music, often seen as the bedrock of musical expression, narrates the human saga across centuries. It’s not merely a relic of the past but a living, breathing conversation between generations. Listening to Beethoven, Mozart, or Chopin, we engage in a dialogue that transcends time, connecting with emotions and thoughts that, though centuries old, are still poignant today. Learning classical music reminded me that a solid foundation is important.

I learned about jazz from my middle school music teacher. Jazz, with its improvisational core, teaches us the beauty of spontaneity and fluid conversation. It's a genre that eschews strict rules, creating a language all its own, one that encourages us to embrace the unexpected and find harmony in the unpredictable. The likes of Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis didn't just play music; they conversed with it, offering listeners a taste of freedom and creativity. Jazz taught me that spontaneous creativity is important in our lives.

Rock music has been the anthem of change and rebellion. Artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and Nirvana used their music to challenge the status quo, giving voice to the spirit of defiance within us. Rock isn’t just music; it’s a movement, a statement, a way of challenging the world and expressing our deepest desires for change. Sometimes we just need to throw up metal and jump into the pit.

Blues is the music of the soul laying bare its truth. Born from deep emotional wellsprings, blues is unvarnished, raw, and real. It conveys life's struggles and joys, embodying resilience and authenticity. When you hear the gravelly voice of Howlin Wolf or when B.B. King or Muddy Waters sang, it wasn’t just notes and words; it was life itself, distilled into music. The lonesomeness of Robert Johnson or Willie Dixon. Blues not only touches your soul, but it will also rip your heart out.

Country music is the art of storytelling set to melodies. It connects listeners to life’s simplest truths and complexities. Whether it's the tunes of Johnny Cash, George Strait or Dolly Parton, country music captures narratives of love, loss, and the daily grind, echoing the rhythms of our shared human experience.

Victor Hugo’s words invite us to an exploration of the vast and varied world of music. Each genre offers a different story, emotion, and perspective, enriching our lives and connecting us more deeply to the tapestry of human experience. Let’s embrace this musical journey, discovering the profound, unspoken messages that each genre of music conveys.

Embark on a voyage of musical discovery. Pick a genre you’re unfamiliar with – be it the soulful blues or the narrative-rich country – and let the music play. In its notes and rhythms, you might just discover uncharted territories of your soul. My Spotify playlists are a jumbled mixture ranging from Classical and jazz to blues and country to hip-hop and metal. Try it. You may discover a new genre of music you like and let it touch your soul.

And don’t forget to turn it up to 11!
