Remember all of our history

It’s important to remember that history isn’t just a series of dates and events—it’s a record of the human experience, both at an individual and collective level. It encompasses all aspects of our past: the admirable, the regrettable, and even the horrifying.

By studying history, we gain a deep understanding of how societal norms, political institutions, and cultures have evolved over time. This context allows us to appreciate how the actions and ideas of the past have shaped the present, including the freedoms we enjoy today.

Attempting to erase or ignore parts of our history can be detrimental. Not only does it rob us of opportunities to learn from our past mistakes, but it also disrespects those who’ve suffered or struggled throughout history. By acknowledging the entirety of our past, we honor their experiences and ensure their stories continue to inform our actions.

Moreover, knowing our history can inspire us to be better. It can motivate us to uphold the positive values that have been fought for, and work harder to rectify historical injustices that still affect society today.

Instead of erasing history, we should strive for a more complete, nuanced understanding of it, that includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s through this understanding that we can hope to continue to progress as a free and just nation.

Be good to one another.
