STRONGER, SAFER SPORTS “KICKOFF” EVENT

I had a great opportunity to attend the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation Stronger Safer Sports Campaign Kickoff event last night that was held at Tanzy Restaurant and iPic Theatres in the Scottsdale Quarter. Thank you Two Gals Events for the invitation. Not only was the reception a great time but the pre-screening of the new Will Smith movie “Concussion” was extremely moving. Afterward, a discussion was held, “Constructive Concussion Discussion”.

First of all, I want to compliment Tanzy Restaurant for not only the fantastic food that was provided but the exceptional service as well.

I grew up in a family that loves the game of football. I played from Pop Warner through high school. It was a “right of passage” for any boy. I had heard and read about the discussion of CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and the discussions about the rule changes to the game. I know about the loss of some great athletes due to CTE. But honestly, I did not understand the deep and widespread impact it has until seeing the movie last night. “Concussion” is the story of Dr. Bennet Omahu, the forensic pathologist who researched the brain damage suffered by professional football players and the efforts of the NFL itself to suppress his findings. It opens nationwide on Christmas Day. I encourage you to see it.

If you don’t know about Nick Lowery and his foundation, take a look:

The website states: "Our Mission is: We are dedicated to return America to greatness by refocusing Education and Youth Development on (A) unleashing each child’s unique Creativity and (B) harnessing these creative new ideas with Leadership skills to transform them into community assets and products."

How about that for a mission!

It doesn’t matter if you have a child that plays contact sports or you just ride a motorcycle. This is something that the entire country can get behind. There have been links from TBI and PTSD to CTE. So this may not only affect professional football players but also our military personnel.
