The Good Fight: Deriving Strength from 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

In the contemporary world, there are myriad challenges that individuals, particularly those of faith, encounter daily. For pastors, the responsibility is profound. Not only are they spiritual leaders guiding their flock, but they also serve as anchors of hope, pillars of strength, and sources of solace for those seeking guidance. In the face of increasing secularization, polarization, and challenges to traditional values, many pastors may, at times, feel overwhelmed or discouraged. However, the scriptures offer timeless wisdom and encouragement, particularly the words penned in 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, which serves as a poignant reminder for spiritual leaders to persevere in their divine calling.

Because we know that this extraordinary day is just ahead, we pray for you all the time—pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something. If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you. Grace is behind and through all of this, our God giving himself freely, the Master, Jesus Christ, giving himself freely. 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (MSG)

The passage from 2 Thessalonians speaks directly to the heart of every pastor. It begins with a note on the imminence of the "extraordinary day," an eschatological reference that signals the culmination of history and the advent of Christ's kingdom. The importance of this day is not to induce fear, but rather to inspire urgency and dedication in the mission to which they've been called.

There are three primary takeaways from this scripture that pastors can internalize:

1. God's Purposeful Preparation: “Pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be..."

Every pastor is handpicked and molded by God for a specific purpose. While the journey may be fraught with trials, it is crucial to understand that these challenges are not arbitrary. They are divine mechanisms to prepare and refine, ensuring that the pastor is "fit" for the sacred calling. The reassurance lies in the knowledge that God is actively involved in this refinement process, always working behind the scenes to equip His chosen ones for their unique role in His grand design (Heb. 13:20-21).

2. Divine Energizing of Good Intentions: “…pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something."

Good intentions, noble aspirations, and acts of faith are commendable. However, without the divine intervention and energy of God, these can fall short of their potential. Pastors need to remember that their strength is not derived from their abilities but from the Almighty. When God infuses His energy into their endeavors, not only do their efforts become more fruitful, but they also transcend human limitations to create lasting impacts (Phil. 4:13).

3. Reciprocal Honor in Jesus' Name: “If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you."

This part of the scripture is both a challenge and a promise. It underscores the importance of leading a life that glorifies Jesus. When pastors walk in the path of righteousness and strive to honor Jesus in their ministries, they are assured of Jesus's reciprocal honor. This symbiotic relationship is an affirmation that those who prioritize God's kingdom will find themselves under His favor and protection (1 Sam. 2:30).

The scripture concludes by emphasizing the grace of God and the selfless sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This serves as a comforting reminder that pastors are not alone in their journey. They are backed by divine grace, which is both the starting point and the sustaining force of their ministry.

To my friend Timbo, as you have the preview service for the church plant in Tucson, know your work is of unparalleled importance. Though the path you tread is often demanding and laden with challenges, find solace in the words of 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12. Embrace God's preparation, seek His energy, and strive to honor Jesus, and in turn, be honored. As you shepherd your flock and impact countless souls, remember that you are an integral part of God's divine plan, and your efforts, when combined with His grace, will surely amount to something eternal. It’s a Kingdom thing. I’m praying for you.
