It seems like I wake up every morning to news about another person sexually harassing another person. It seems to be happening in epidemic proportions these days. You know that it may not be increasing in actual incidents, however, more victims are speaking up.
According to a survey by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), 50 percent of women say that they have experienced workplace sexual harassment while at work. That boggles my mind. Half of all women are being sexually harassed at work. Come on people. Just freakin stop!
As a dad of two daughters, I constantly think of how to protect them the best I can. It’s just what we do as dads. I believe there are a few root causes to this sexual harassment problem we have in this country.
1. LACK OF RESPECT
A genuine lack of respect for others. This country doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the word respect any longer. In fact, a person once told me that they could not be disrespected unless they allow themselves to be. I disagree completely. That type of statement takes the burden of respect off a person. Respect your elders is what I learned.
2. SEEING A PERSON AS AN OBJECT NOT AS A HUMAN BEING
This is just absurdity at its finest. Why can’t we see others for who they are? A human being. Women are not just a set of boobs and guys are not just a penis.
3. IT’S A POWER THING
Controlling and narcissistic comes to mind. Some need to belittle others to make themselves feel better.
How do we stop all this bovine excrement then? Don’t allow anyone around you speak disrespectfully of another. Plain and simple. Don’t allow it to happen. Speak up immediately and hold people accountable for their words and actions. And this is definitely not a politically correct thing to say, but I don’t care who you are, no one is exempt from getting their ass knocked out for inappropriately speaking to, touching, or whatever, to my girls. Just remember that.
Be good to one another.
